Berta Torres Mata

Berta Torres Mata, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, in Devine. Born on June 23, 1959, in Pearsall to Florentino Torres Sr. and Valentina Lopez Torres, Berta was a beacon of love and strength for her family and all who knew her.

She is survived by her devoted husband Jesus Ascencion; children Angelica Brackeen (Bobby), Robert Torres Mata, Veronica Mata (Jose Ramos), and Jesse Mata (Monica); as well as an incredible legacy of 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Berta was the proud daughter of Florentino Torres Sr., sister to Florentino Jr., Esuebio Gonzales, Vicente Torres, Juan Torres, and Jose Torres. She shared countless memories with them throughout the years that will forever be etched in their hearts.

Preceded in death by her late husband Jose Martin Mata and by her beloved mother Valentina Lopez Torres and sister Guadalupe T. Carrillo, Berta’s life was marked by resilience amid loss but also filled with joy from the bonds she created within her family.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 19 at Trevino Royal Oaks Funeral Chapels in Pearsall from 3 PM to 9 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM. A graveside service will follow on Wednesday morning at the Dilley Cemetery at 10 AM where we will gather to honor this remarkable woman whose spirit lives on through generations.

In remembering Berta's life—a tapestry woven together by love—her family invites everyone touched by her kindness to celebrate not just the sorrow of losing such an extraordinary person but also the profound impact she had during her time among us. May we carry forward the lessons learned from Berta: compassion for others above all else and unwavering devotion to our families.
