Jaiden Jase Cantu Smith, a bright and spirited young man, was born on November 26, 2007, in San Antonio. He left this world far too soon on September 21, 2025. Jaiden's life may have been brief, but it was filled with passion and purpose that touched the hearts of everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his loving mother Veronica Cantu Culberson and stepfather Michael; his cherished grandmother Mariola Martinez; paternal grandmother Stella Smith Woods; paternal grandfather Steve Smith III; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will forever hold him close in their memories. He is also survived by Jeffery Handy and his wife Rochelle, who held a special place in his life. Jaiden was preceded in death by his father Mario D. Smith and grandfather Fernando Cantu.
A senior at Sonia Sotomayor High School at the time of his passing, Jaiden had dreams that soared high like the trains he adored—his fascination with locomotives mirrored his adventurous spirit. Whether he was sketching designs or immersing himself in video games, Jaiden’s creativity knew no bounds. His love for army tanks reflected not just an interest but also a deep-seated desire to serve—a calling he embraced through active participation in ROTC. Jaiden found joy in simple pleasures: walking his beloved dog brought him peace amidst life's chaos. Those moments spent outdoors were often accompanied by laughter shared with friends or family members who admired both his kindness and determination. As someone who aspired to join the Marines one day, Jaiden embodied courage beyond his years. He will be lovingly remembered not only for his dedication to writing his book and the lawn services he proudly provided within his community, but also for the presence he carried. His deep voice, kind and respectful words, and the excellence he put into everything he did will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Though our hearts ache from this profound loss—the world feels dimmer without Jaiden's radiant smile—it is essential we remember how deeply he loved those around him. In every drawing created or game played fiercely until victory claimed its rightful place—he leaves behind echoes of laughter that will resonate long after he's gone.
In honoring Jaiden’s memory today—and always—we celebrate not only what made him unique but also how profoundly he impacted our lives during such a fleeting time here on Earth.
Jaiden's life will be honored in a private service with close family and friends. Anyone wishing to sign the guestbook or share a memory may do so online.
