Obituary

Police Officer Jose Chapa Perez, a devout servant of the Lord, family man and dedicated law enforcement officer whose End of Watch was on February 11, 2026 at the age of 80 was surrounded by family in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on November 6, 1945 in Pearsall, Texas. Jose lived a life markedby service, love, and commitment.

With a distinguished law enforcement career spanning over 30 years, Jose served as a Lieutenant, Deputy, Master Peace Officer, for both the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and Elmendorf Police Department. His dedication to protecting and serving his community was apparent not just in his work, but in the respect and admiration he garnered from colleagues and community alike.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Jose proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He entered the military in 1966 and Honorably separated in 1972 achieving Rank of

Specialist E5 (SP5) as a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 17B5 Ground to Air Radar leader. Jose bravery and commitment to his country were recognized with a pending SilverStar Medal Award. He also was a recipient of 3 other military awards: Valor In Combat, Beyond Bravery, and Good Conduct.

Jose other military service and recognitions he held were 18th Airborne Special Forces HALO Paratrooper; Operation Coronado X, and Military Police.

Throughout his life, Jose was known for his deep love for the Lord, his country, his family and friends.

He leaves behind his cherished children, Leticia Perez-Ortega (Jose de Jesus) and Daniel Perez, who carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength.

He is also survived his siblings: Criselda Chapa Perez, Noel Chapa Perez, and Graciela Chapa Perez de Carrizales (Luis, his favorite brother in law) all who shared many memories and moments of joy with him.

Jose was a proud “Daddy Joe” grandfather to seven grandchildren that he loved dearly: Giovanni Perez-Ortega(Mikaela), Gisela Maria Ortega, Idalmis Modesta Ortega, Sarai de Yeshua Ortega, Jaylssa Reanne Perez, Elijah Aiden Israel Perez, and Kaylei Celeste Perez. His impact on their lives will undoubtedly be felt for generations to come.

He also leaves behind nieces and nephews he loved:

Kris Perez(Lisa), Kristie Ana Perez Hester(JW), Ysenia Anais Mullen(Patrick.)

His great nieces that were a joy to love include: Lunabella Perez, Jesse James Noel Hester, Gabriel Eli Hester, Rowan Elle Hester, and Graciana Marie Mullen.

He also leaves behind the love of his life Marcela Lopez Mendez who was so important to him .

Jose was preceded in death by his father, Jose Villarreal Perez, his mother, Ernestina Chapa Perez, and his son, Carlos Israel Perez.

Their memories remain alive in the hearts of those he loved, as his spirit continues to inspire and guide his family as they navigate life without him.

As we remember Jose Chapa Perez, we celebrate a life filled with service, affection, and unwavering love and devotion to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
