Maria Elida Pena

Maria Elida Pena passed away peacefully on June 8, at the age of 93 surrounded by close family.

Born on April 26, 1931, in Pearsall, to her parents Jesus C. Pena and Sabas N. Pena, Maria was known affectionately to family and friends as “La Prieta.”

She was a small but fierce woman who found joy in listening to music, dancing and playing with her nieces and nephews. La Prieta was strong-willed and stubborn at times, but she had an enormous heart and a wonderful sense of humor. Embodying the best qualities including unconditional love, La Prieta appreciated simple things in life such as dancing, cooking, watching westerns, going to Dairy Queen, and visiting with family.

La Prieta is proceeded in death by her parents; sisters, Cipriana P. Reid, Rosario P. Cuevas; and brothers, Jesus C. Pena Jr, Ruben N. Pena, Rodolfo N. Pena.

She is survived my numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 13 from 8:30 a.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment to follow at the Frio County Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Gabriel Cuevas, Jerry Reyna, Charlie Villarreal, Aaron Martinez, Mathew Lanning and Kristopher Lanning.
