Coach Salazar was a beloved member of the Dilley ISD community and his impact on our students and athletes cannot be overstated. Coach Salazar began teaching and coaching at Dilley ISD in 1974, and over the next four decades, he dedicated his life to inspiring, encouraging, and supporting our students. He coached football, basketball, and track during his early years at Dilley ISD, as well as serving as an elementary PE coach. In 1986, Coach Salazar launched the Dilley XC programs, and the boys XC teams made their first appearance at the UIL State XC Meet. As a coach launching a new sport, Coach Salazar faced some challenges, but the boys team represented Dilley ISD/Dilley High School by placing 1st at district, 1st at regionals, and 5th at state. He also started the DES track program with Coach Acosta in 1974 and AAU track programs in Dilley in 1977. Coach Salazar led teams and individuals to regionals and state appearances coaching both the girls and boys track and cross-country programs. In 1997, Coach Salazar’s Boys XC Team led the UIL 2A State Championship. He spent his entire life inspiring, encouraging, and supporting DISD athletes. He influenced thousands of Dilley ISD students as a mentor, father figure, PE Coach, and Athletic Coach by serving the Dilley ISD community for over 40 years of public service. After his retirement in 2005, Coach Salazar served as a substitute teacher and volunteered his time during track and cross-country practice. He could be seen under the Friday Night Lights supporting the Dilley Wolves, at basketball games, and early mornings at track and cross-country meets. He loved the Dilley Wolves and Lady Wolves Athletic programs and bled maroon. Coach Salazar's legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the countless memories he helped create.
